When we talk about pre-Columbian ceramics, we often come to those produced by the Chancay civilization and in particular those found in the archaeological site of Ancon. Chancay is a coastal town in central Peru and about 70 kilometers north of Lima.

The “Chancay” produced ceramics in large quantities. They used molds. The pieces were then painted (dark colors on light backgrounds).

Chancay ceramics are often ovoid, anthropomorphic and are used as jars or urns. Others depict naked men or women. They are standing with their arms turned upwards. The jars are called “Chino”. this name comes from the fact that the eyes of the people represented were outlined in black. The human effigies are called “Cuchimilco”.

The Chancay culture appeared in the 11th century. It was dominated by the Chimu empire until the advent of the Incas in 1470. The Spanish arrived the following century.

The jar that we are offering for sale probably represents an important person. Indeed, only the notables wore large earrings called “tambas”. The person is carrying a ceremonial kero in the hands.

History of the piece : it entered a private french collection in 1966.

The condition of the piece is good. It has never been restored
